Nice article, but...the oldest documented possible contact? Hard to choose, but as example - war between the army of Charlemagne and Empire of Romeys (also known as Byzantine empire) on western part of Balkan...serbian mercenaries fight against the Franks, as the allies of Constantinople (this is also documented historically). Maybe you don t recognize them as a part of French history, who knows?
