The mask is a ritual element present at all world peoples. The masks wear at different moments around the winter Holidays, in Romania and Republic of Moldova, have a meaning about the veneration cult of the sacred animals, some was ociated with The Sun Cult.
The game of masks has its origin in the ancient myths.
Mircea Eliade wrote “ These ceremonies are common in Balcans , especially in Romania, during the 12 days of the Christmas Eve until the Epiphany”. At these traditions origin were the ceremonies about the periodic return of deads and were made many animal masks ( horse, goat, bear etc.)
These customs are intented to banish the bad spirits. The groups of youth still wander nowadays trough the romanian villages.
The youth don’t reveal their real name. They are divided in two categories, the beauties and the uglies.
„ Capra” and „ Ursul” are two customs that dates backs thousands of years.
„ Capra” is play by the young men at The New Year celebration. Wherever the goat went it is said that will be rich harvests. „ Dansul Ursului” , a sacred animal symbol of death and the revive of Nature and world, is practiced in the areas of Bucovina and Moldova.
The bear,it said that, have protective, therapeutic and meteorogical virtues.
” Țurca” is specific for Transylvania, represent a preistoric divinity, this was born at winter solstice.
The young after dressing the mask enjoy during the caroling, he dies violently trough ault or shooting and he will be revive symbolic.
“ Jocul căluților sau caiuților” is specific for Moldova.
The little horse is a wood simulacrum carried by a young man, this simulacrum rememdis about horses, these animals par excellence solar.
The dance represent the fusion human with Nature.
