"The Dance of the Scissors" or "Gala Dance" is an originating dance from the Chanka region in Peru. Its musical accompaniment is provided by violin and harp, and later it spread to the regions of Huancavelica, Ayacucho, and Apurímac. In Apurímac, the dance is called "Saqras," in Ayacucho, it's known as "danzaq," while in Huancavelica, the dancer of the scissors is referred to as "Gala."
The dance of the scissors is a tribute to the protective mountains or "apus" that watch over the people. As a result, its performance is accompanied by colorful attire.
The origin of the dance is uncertain; however, some believe it was created in reaction to colonialism and the suppression of indigenous ideals. During the 1500s, the dancers were persecuted by Christians because the dance was believed to be a manifestation of black magic.
